Carolina Espinal joined HarbourVest in 2004 to focus on partnership investments in Europe and other emerging markets and became a Managing Director in 2015. Carolina focuses on managing European venture capital and buyout partnership investments and has collaborated with the secondary and co-investment groups on several investment opportunities. Carolina is also the Chair of the Firm’s Primary Investment Committee. She serves on the advisory boards of funds managed by CVC Capital Partners, Inflexion, and Advent International.

Her previous experience includes two years as a financial analyst with the Merrill Lynch Energy and Power mergers and acquisitions team in Houston.

Carolina graduated from Rice University with a BA in Managerial Studies, Policy Studies, and Economics in 2000. She received an MSc in Finance from the London Business School in 2003. Carolina speaks fluent Spanish and French.

John focuses on private equity fund commitments and equity co-investments in the Asia-Pacific region. He joined Manulife in 2009 and was based in Toronto until relocating to Hong Kong in 2014. 

John holds a B.A. from the Ivey Business School of Western University and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. 

Jinwen Chen is Director of Investments at the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Investments, where she helps steward the Institution’s $2.8 billion endowment. She leads portfolio strategy, sourcing, and manager relationships across private equity, venture capital, and real assets. Jinwen is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Virginia, and she was recognized by Chief Investment Officer magazine as one of the industry’s “NextGen” leaders shaping the future of institutional investing.

Bei is the Chief Investment Officer of Advance Treasury and Fingerboard Family Office, where she is responsible for the investment of the single-family office, the family foundation, as well as the Advance corporate liquid assets. Headquartered in New York City, Advance is a private, family-owned enterprise for the past 100 years, with businesses spanning across media, entertainment, communications, technology and education globally. Advance’s portfolio of exceptional companies includes Condé Nast, Advance Local, Stage Entertainment, The IRONMAN Group, American City Business Journals, Leaders Group, Turnitin, and POP. Advance is also among the largest shareholders in Charter Communications, Warner Bros. Discovery and Reddit. Bei has established a reputation as a long-term investor with a significant background in portfolio management, alternative investments and strategic planning. Prior to Advance, Bei was the CIO for Endowments and Foundations at Northern Trust, where she was the Chairwoman for the Endowments and Foundations Investment Committee and a voting member of the Investment Oversight Committee of the OCIO program of $130B+. Previously, she was the Director of Alternatives at Helmsley Charitable Trust. Before that, she held senior investment and management positions at Pfizer, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan. Bei is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Victoria Foundation and the Knowles Foundation. She is a member of the Advisory Council for Alternative Investments at the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity.
