Dealmaking has held up well in the first half of 2022. The M&A market registered a total of US$1.1trn from 4,771 deals in H1 2022, down 30.7% and 18% respectively year on year. However, these percentage falls should be put into context. Not only was 2021 a record-breaker, but the bulk of that was also front-loaded into the first nine months and by Q4 activity was already beginning to normalize. In this respect, what has been witnessed to date in 2022 is a correction to more sustainable levels.
Even with the easing off of M&A activity from the end of last year, there is still a considerable margin for dealmaking to remain in line, and even above, historic levels. Taking the US alone, the 10-year trailing average for annual M&A value is US$1.49trn. Midway into 2022, we are already two-thirds of the way to meeting that threshold.
