Data centre financing – Do the opportunities still outweigh the risks?
Last year, there were 35 data centre financing transactions, with €1.1bn capital market debt and €10.3bn of loan debt, according to data from Infralogic. So far this year, there have already been five deals with €292.8m of capital market debt and €3.64bn of loan debt.

Jim is a qualified accountant with over 30 years of experience in technology led infrastructure and construction businesses. He has been involved in large scale projects which delivered across North America, Europe the GCC and Asia Pacifics. Having been the CFO of a number of private equity owned and of full market listed groups he has significant experience of working with businesses to develop their financial maturity as they scale. Operating on a global scale he is alert to the local needs of businesses working across multiple jurisdictions and adept at supporting complex corporate, funding and operational structures.
Jim joined in early 2023 and looks after Pure’s financial control, FP&A, tax, treasury, non-construction procurement and leveraged funding activities.
Luke Hanson is the Sector Lead for Telecoms Structured Finance in EMEA at SMBC Group, based in London. Since joining the bank in 2014 from KPMG’s Infrastructure Corporate Finance group, Luke has been involved in lending and advisory mandates across digital infrastructure, transport, and social infrastructure sectors.
Most recently he has been instrumental in shaping SMBC’s digital infrastructure strategy across the region and has led SMBC Group’s involvement in high-profile Data Centre, Tower, and Fibre transactions across EMEA.
He holds a Master of Engineering degree from Oxford University.
Stuart is a Partner at Art Capital with over 20 years of experience in credit advisory and investment. He was previously Head of KKR’s Private Credit business in Australasia and North Asia, where he was responsible for all facets of the investment and portfolio management process across KKR’s Private Credit and Special Situations vehicles. Prior to KKR, he established Pacific Alliance Group’s (“PAG”) first Special Situations and Direct Lending funds.
He has direct investment experience across a broad range of credit, both from his time at KKR and PAG as well his roles in the Special Situations groups of Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse in Hong Kong, and restructuring and NPL experience at FTI (previously Ferrier Hodgson). His experience includes investments across the capital structure in both primary and secondary transactions in loans, public and private debt and equity instruments, MBO transactions, convertible instruments, IPOs and various structured products.
Stuart holds a number of board positions, is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Commerce from Flinders University.
