What are the challenges and solutions for investing in transportation infrastructure M&A?
The transport sector has faced many challenges in the past few years, particularly due to the pandemic and its associated lockdowns and travel restrictions. However, in the past 12 months, we have started to see a return to a level of normality in terms of consumer demand and a rebound in investor interest. Yet despite traffic returning to pre-pandemic levels and even exceeding them in 2023, not everything is back to normal. Hybrid working patterns are still in place, resulting in less commuting to city centres. Higher inflation, and the ongoing volatility of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East also impact the sector. Additionally, the need to meet sustainability goals, particularly regarding reducing the carbon footprint and achieving net-zero goals, also provides its own challenges. During this session, panellists will discuss the challenges that investors are facing and will outline where the next set of opportunities lie for the year ahead.

Nanda Kamat joined MUFG in December 2009 and is currently the head of the Infrastructure Project Finance team. She has over 15 years of experience in project and infrastructure finance and while at MUFG has led numerous financial advisories for large-scale infrastructure projects including for the LAX Automated People Mover, I-395 Express Lanes, and Purple Line projects. She has also successfully closed financings in both the bank and bond markets for numerous greenfield and brownfield infrastructure assets, including PR-22, Long Beach Container Terminal, Veolia District Energy (now Vicinity Energy), and Indiana Toll Road. Nanda previously held positions at Transurban USA, Goldman Sachs, and Societe Generale. Nanda holds an MBA from The Wharton School, an MA in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University, and a BS in Finance from New York University.
Ryan Holbrook is a Senior Vice President in Brookfield’s Infrastructure Group. In this role, Mr. Holbrook is primarily responsible for transportation-related investment activities in North America.
Prior to joining Brookfield in 2022, Mr. Holbrook was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs in the Global Industrials group in New York.
Mr. Holbrook holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary
Amit Rikhy is Co-founder and CEO of CAG Holdings, Carlyle’s dedicated investment and development platform for airport infrastructure. CAG is built to develop and invest in airport infrastructure at the intersection of decarbonization, energy transition and digitization, in conjunction with delivering positive community and customer outcomes.
Amit has 25+ years of airport development, investment and management experience and has led over 50 airport projects globally. Under Amit’s leadership, CAG led the sourcing, structuring, development and financing of the landmark $9.5 billion New Terminal One at JFK — the largest, privately financed aviation infrastructure project ever undertaken in the United States, which will deliver a world-class (Skytrax 5-star) experience for NTO’s airline partners, passengers, retail & catering partners and visitors. At the core of this world-class experience, will be a terminal that is powered by the largest rooftop solar array in United States, complemented with a next-generation sustainable and resilient microgrid and a fully digitized passenger journey from curb to the airfield. Throughout his career, Amit has worked closely with management teams to drive business performance and transformation and has served on multiple airport boards, where he has provided guidance on development, regulatory, financing and business performance objectives.
Amit has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. He resides in Washington DC and serves on the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School Real Estate/Infrastructure Advisory Board.
Mr. Lane is a Managing Director and member of the investment team responsible for sourcing, transaction evaluation, due diligence, and asset management of JLC's investments. Mr. Lane joined JLC in 2018 and brings over 15 years of M&A and infrastructure investment experience focused across all sectors including transportation, energy, and communications. Prior to joining JLC, Mr. Lane was a Director in the Mergers and Acquisitions group at Credit Suisse focused on Power and Renewables. Prior to that, Mr. Lane was a Vice President in the Corporate Investment Banking group at Loop Capital Markets and began his career as an attorney with DLA Piper focused on patent law and intellectual property. Mr. Lane currently serves as a director on the boards of JLC’s communications investments, AOC Connect and GeoLinks, manages JLC’s investment in the New Terminal One project at JFK Airport, and led the acquisition and exit of the Sustainability Partners former portfolio company. Mr. Lane received a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from Duke University, Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School and Master of Business Administration degree from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
Patrick Selinger represents clients in a wide range of U.S. and international transactions, including infrastructure development, mergers and acquisitions, project financings, and public-private partnerships.
Patrick also served as in-house counsel at a multi-national commodities trading company and as a secondee to the international legal department of a major Japanese trading house in Tokyo.
