Distress, sectoral impact and proactive restructuring in Italy
Italy’s restructuring and distressed market in 2026 is experiencing high activity, with 18% of companies in distress, the highest in Europe, driven by weak consumer demand, cost inflation and high energy price. At the same time, early-stage restructuring is driven by lenders’ proactive monitoring, mandatory early-warning systems, and the transposition of new EU harmonisation rules. Acute stress is hitting the fashion, manufacturing, automotive, retail and construction sectors, particularly companies with weaker capital structures with limited access to financing. Companies in these sectors will increasingly require new capital injections and deleveraging solutions to stabilise their financial positions and navigate new regulatory and market pressures. Alberto Beretta is Deputy General Manager and Chief Lending Officer at Banca CF+, where he oversees lending operations—ranging from origination and monitoring to the management of non-performing loans, recovery, and the formulation of credit policies. Throughout his career, he has held senior positions at some of Italy’s leading banking groups—including Intesa Sanpaolo, Banca Popolare di Vicenza, Banca Popolare di Milano, Banca Commerciale Italiana, Banca Popolare di Bari, and UBI Banca—gaining over forty years of experience in corporate lending, structured finance, and corporate restructuring. He has also served as a director and advisor for industrial and financial companies, supporting numerous turnaround and extraordinary finance transactions.
Alessandro Lanzi is a Partner in the Italian Restructuring & Special Situations practice at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader. He advises financial institutions, investors and corporates on complex distressed and special situations matters, with a focus on bankruptcy-related proceedings and recovery strategies. Alessandro is highly experienced in dispute resolution, corporate and commercial litigation, and bankruptcy matters. He also has significant experience in transactions involving illiquid assets and receivables owed by public administrations. Alessandro is recognised for his pragmatic approach and ability to help clients maximise value in complex financial situations.
Giulia has over thirty years’ experience in this industry and specialises in structuring complex transactions. She advises debtors, banks, Italian and international investors on real estate financing, acquisitions, project finance and securitisation, factoring, debt restructuring transactions, bankruptcy law, insolvency proceedings and distressed assets purchase transactions. She has significant experience in debt restructuring in the shipbuilding and healthcare industries. Giulia’s practice also includes infrastructures and procurement with a particular focus on the energy sector. Giulia has been ranked as a leading lawyer in prominent international legal guides such as Chambers, IFLR 1000 and Legal 500.
