Panel discussion – Hydrogen beyond the hype
The first hydrogen projects were announced in Europe over five years ago, at which point hydrogen was billed as the solution to Europe’s energy transition. But regulatory support at national and supranational level has taken a while to come in, and project costs and supply chain issues have raised concerns about its viability. Is hydrogen the key to the global energy transition, or is its complexity causing the technology to lose favour with investors and lenders?

Bilal leads on the growth equity and infrastructure investments mandate in power-to-x and industrial decarbonisation at Octopus Energy's fund management arm. Prior to Octopus, Bilal was part of the CCUS and hydrogen investments team at BP and has a background in the development and execution of upstream oil & gas projects.
Glenn leads the risk transfer area of Howden’s Climate Risk and Resilience team, which focuses on insurance solutions for de-risking the energy transition, enabling trading in the carbon markets and helping clients manage the physical risks of climate change. Glenn has over 10 years’ experience in the insurance market having built and lead environmental liability teams in both underwriting and broking. Prior to his insurance career he worked as an environmental engineer in natural resources and construction sectors, primarily in the Australian mining industry. Glenn holds an honours degree in Environmental Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration.
Colin Laing is a Process and Development Engineer with 17+ years of experience in the Oil and Gas, Petrochemical and Energy Network sectors in the UK. Recently, he’s been involved in technical reviews for European Governments on projects like the East Coast Cluster (ECC) and Hynet at Ofgem, and the Aramis CCS system with Xodus.
From 2019 to 2024, Colin worked at Ofgem, where he helped develop the Regulated Asset Base Model and Network Code for CCS, Nuclear investments at Sizewell C in the UK. His was also the lead engineer for the Gas transmission regulated sector including the potential Hydrogen transition of the network during his spell with Ofgem.
At Xodus, Colin is the Advisory team lead for CCS and works with a range of stakeholders in the CCS industry covering the technical and commercial aspects of the burgeoning sector.
Alex joined Inframation as a greenfield analyst in May 2018, becoming head of data analysis in March 2022. He previously worked for risk consultancy AKE International and as an analyst and editor for political risk publication Global Risk Insights, specialising in Southeast Asian political affairs. He completed his PhD in geography and politics at Newcastle University in 2016.
